Finding My Perfect Fit: A Gait Analysis Experience

Confession: I’ve always been a little hesitant to call myself a “runner.” The image of long legged, lithe, speedy athletes always comes to mind, and I definitely don’t fit that box. But I’ve learned that being a runner isn’t about speed or physique or about being crowned for Strava segments; it’s about getting out there and enjoying the run and the process, and that starts with the right gear. I used to think all running shoes were about colours and looks and well-known brands. Big mistake! A recent gait analysis appointment at Whirlwind Sports in Penzance completely changed my perspective, and I’m here to tell you why every runner, regardless of experience, needs one.

Running is hard enough as it is, and ill-fitting gear can make it even more challenging. We’ve all experienced the annoyance of leggings that constantly fall down or a t-shirt with a chafing seam (and felt that sting in the shower). But when it comes to running, footwear is paramount. It’s the most important piece of kit to get right because your feet are involved with every single stride. And with the high cost of trainers, getting the right pair is an investment in your comfort and performance.

So, how do you find the perfect fit? Surely a pair of trainers is a pair of trainers? NO! Is the short answer. This, I have now learned is where gait analysis comes in. It’s a process that examines how you run, and it’s beneficial for everyone – from seasoned marathoners to those just starting out. It can help identify potential issues, prevent injuries, and improve performance.

While I was in Penzance, I popped into Whirlwind Sports, a local shop that’s been a fixture in the town for as long as I can remember. They’ve kitted me out for swimming, hockey, and now my kids’ sports and school uniform needs. While browsing, I noticed an advertisement for free gait analysis. My initial thought was, “That’s for real runners, not me.” It’s a common misconception, and one I quickly learned was completely wrong.

As I was browsing, a helpful staff member, David, asked if I needed assistance. I explained that I was just looking, but he mentioned their gait analysis service. I confessed my running insecurities, but after a short conversation about my upcoming triathlon, I found myself booking an appointment for the following Friday. What had I gotten myself into?

Friday morning arrived, and I was greeted by David at Whirlwind Sports. He took me to a space at the back of the shop where we discussed my general running routine, terrain, mileage, and goals. He examined my current trainers and took a close look at my feet. I walked barefoot so he could observe the movement of my arches, ankles, and feet.

Then, it was time for the treadmill. I walked and jogged, there was no requirement to run for any length of time or any speed.  Whilst on the treadmill David filmed my feet with an iPad. He showed me the footage, pointing out my hip, knee, and ankle alignment. I’d never really focused on this aspect of my body before, and what he pointed out was interesting. He then started to talk about this in line with different shoes and the technology and mechanics of them.

Next, we assessed the mobility in my toes and, especially, my ankles. I was surprised by the difference between my left and right sides. This whole process gave me a newfound appreciation for my body and what it does for me.

David then brought out several pairs of shoes he thought would be a good fit, explaining the technology and design of each one and relating them back to how it would work for my specific foot shape and gait. It felt like a personal shopping experience! He guided me through each shoe, considering the technology, the fit, and how it felt on my feet.

By this point, with the information I had meant that I knew what I wanted and cared deeply about the functionality of the shoe and what it was going to do for me.  It was crystal clear what I needed in a running shoe. After trying on several shoes and a few laps of the shop floor I knew which were the trainers for me.

What I Learned

The importance of properly fitted running shoes cannot be underestimated. It’s crucial for both comfort and, more importantly, injury prevention. The statistics for new runners who get injured after increasing their mileage are staggering, and I wonder how many of those injuries could be avoided with a simple gait analysis.

Gait analysis is truly for everyone. At no point did I feel judged or like I was wasting David’s time. The entire appointment was tailored to examining my movement and the specific stressors of running on my body. I came away with a much deeper understanding of what I need and want from a running shoe. It could not have been a more helpful or positive experience.

Key Pointers:

  1. Book a gait analysis! If you’re in Cornwall, I highly recommend Whirlwind Sports in Truro or Penzance. You can book online or in-store.
  2. Wear your running gear. This will allow you to comfortably use the treadmill, and it also gives the staff valuable information about your current running habits.
  3. Consider your running habits. Think about where and why you run. Knowing this will help the team find the right shoe for your needs.
  4. Prioritise function over fashion. While looks are a bonus, functionality is key to preventing injury and improving performance. Many shoes come in a variety of colours, so you can usually find a functional shoe that you also like the look of.

No matter where you are, find your local running shop and book a gait analysis. Your body will thank you for it, and who knows, that PB might not seem so elusive after all!
